Marstons Mills, MA – A loose emu named Walter drew widespread attention Sunday afternoon after slipping out of Olde Homestead Farm and wandering several miles across Cape Cod before being safely recaptured.
According to owners Dr. Joan Spiegel and Russell Giammarco, they first learned of the escape when they received an emergency alert reporting emu sightings in the area. Walter had already begun a three to four-mile trek in the direction of Sandwich, drawing curiosity and concern from residents who spotted him along the way.
The bird’s unexpected adventure quickly spread on social media, with locals sharing photos and lighthearted commentary as updates came in.
Walter’s journey ended without incident when the couple’s son, Nick, located him near Clifford Circle. The emu was described as tired but unharmed. He was safely trailered back to the farm.
