Police Pursuit Ends in Violent Crash Near Sagamore Bridge, Route 6 Shut Down for Hours
Bourne, MA — A police pursuit that began in Barnstable on Saturday afternoon ended in a violent crash on Route 6 near the Sagamore Bridge, forcing the closure of the highway for several hours.
The incident began when Barnstable Police attempted to stop a gray Ford F-150 following a reported traffic violation. The driver refused to comply, accelerating down Route 132. During the attempted stop, the suspect struck another vehicle directly in front of the Barnstable Police Station before fleeing toward Route 6.
As the pursuit continued onto the highway, a Barnstable County Sheriff’s Deputy joined the chase while Massachusetts State Police staged ahead of the suspect’s route. Troopers deployed STOP Sticks just before the Sagamore Bridge, successfully disabling the truck. The vehicle lost control and crashed violently, ejecting the driver.
Emergency personnel from Bourne and Sandwich Fire Departments responded immediately, providing medical aid at the scene. The suspect was transported by ambulance to St. Luke’s Medical Center in New Bedford with undisclosed injuries. Authorities have not released details on the condition of the motorist struck earlier in the chase.
Route 6 remained closed for roughly three hours while Massachusetts State Police accident reconstruction units examined the crash site. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding both the pursuit and the crash.
